So this is one of those houses that I really enjoyed working on! I got to work with a contractor that I really enjoy and who shared my vision of how to take an old home and turn it into something modern but still appreciate the old. The exterior of this house had the original footprint of a small ranch – incredibly small and when I got it, the architectural elements had already been decided but before the finishes had been decided. And so I was able to help bring a little bit of the old back into this house that was practically new although we did salvage the foundation, the brick and we kept the footprint of most of the original house in tact, just accentuated it’s positives by bumping it up and back.

Exterior

I felt like the architectural elements of this house were much more modern feeling so to add character and charm to the exterior, I wanted to make it feel more in tuned with the neighborhood. We incorporated the X-patterns that are super traditional, while the black aluminum windows in an offset pattern were more modern and the front door had a very modern flair to it. We duplicated the four-pane window above each garage panel and the door. We also did a stamped walkway in a herringbone pattern up to the front door and painted the front door a soft blue to add some color to the exterior. I like how we’ve got the original brick that we did a lime wash to, and added planking in a soft gray tone to different elements with the black. The house has a lot of dimension and I like how many different peaks and valleys there are to the roof line to give it depth and character.

Entry

Inside, since the entryway was original, I wanted it to feel interesting. It wasn’t a massive entryway, so I wanted it to have a wow factor with the tongue and groove ceiling and the herringbone floor that is SO beautiful.

Office

Off the entryway we have this great office space. To keep the flow open, we added french doors as barn doors that slide on the inside of the room instead of the outside. To make this room feel really interesting as soon as you walk in, and almost to give that wow factor from the entrance to the house, we did these built-in bookcases with the offset boxes and the library ladder and fantastic light fixture. The built-ins on the back wall really draw the eye in and the soft blue inside is such a fun, but still really calm and soothing pop. It’s one of the first things you see when you walk in the house and so it almost extends the entryway.

Kitchen

Oooh this kitchen! Wow was this a huge kitchen, with so much space and a cook’s dream with that stunning stove. We had enough room for these three gorgeous pendant lights over the island and that interesting hood that was subtle but so elegant. I didn’t want the hood to overpower the room since the cabinetry was so striking and the oven was over-the-top. I wanted the hood to be understated, almost like you don’t notice it because everything else is so interesting. I like how this kitchen has lots of different nooks but is still so open to the great room. You’ve got the side with the microwave and refrigerator and a prep station. To make it a little bit more interesting we did the cabinetry there in navy on the left, right and center lowers. The uppers on this side nook we did a soft blue to match the uppers flanking the stove. One of my favorite details in the kitchen is that fabulous brass detail on the sides of the island. The island was over-the-top extra with the quartz countertop, brass detail and then the toe kick on the island is actually a quartz slab as well so it’s super durable for kids, an insane selling point!

Living Room

Having so much natural light from 3 sides made this space super bright and inviting. The fireplace is an obvious feature, and that touch of luxe that is so elegant. With so many views outside, through the windows and the door to the backyard as well as sliding doors to the side patio made this whole space feel huge.

Dining Room

Having the dining room right there off the kitchen and great room just made the open concept even more fantastic. I love the light fixture – fun fact, it’s the fixture I have in my daughter’s room! It’s such a great fixture to create an elegant vibe in this dining room. A notch up in elegance from the lantern style in the great room and the pendants in the kitchen, but I wanted it to have that more elegant feel for this formal space. The nook area in the dining room was just a spot where I felt like wallpaper would make the nook stand out as a wow factor and made the dining room feel like its own space instead of just an extension of the living room.

Pantry

I wanted something fun in here, and going with the green lowers, marble countertop and the green open shelves was perfect to achieve that. Just a happy little spot and a really functional space to be able to have great storage and countertop space. I would use this as my baking center and pantry where everything was stashed but also where I’d go to use my mixer, my food processor, all the things!

Coffee Bar

Each little nook in this home has a fun identity. For the coffee bar, I love the pops of lavender where the back wall is a gorgeous lavender wallpaper and we matched it on the inset of the cabinetry. The open shelving and the Ellerbeck sconces (some of my favorite lights) make this a sweet and super functional spot.

What a good mudpsace! I love how functional this space is. When we laid the tile out in this pattern, it actually feels like you’ve got a giant rug in this room. But it’s tile and it’s porcelain tile so it’s super durable. As a backsplash around the sink, we did soapstone so that it felt more elevated than simple tile but also crazy easy to clean up since I assume several pets will live in this house. That’s also why down below, we did the dog bowls to give them that extra little spot – a fun and whimsical space. Then the great blue color makes this a dramatic but fun space.

Laundry

This house actually has two laundry rooms – one off the main suite and one of the second floor. This one, I wanted it to feel a little bit more sophisticated like an extension of the main bedroom. We used the same tile and countertops as the main bathroom but made it more laid back with the buffalo print wallpaper and basket-weave light fixture. Then, if you’ll notice, the shelves are also the same marble as the countertops.

Main Suite

We went with a soft blue that is the same color as the front door so things tie together nicely since this room is right off the front of the house. The suite has its own access to the backyard and has its own private patio space which is so nice. The brass light fixture adds so much beauty to this room. It’s a lovely retreat!

Main Bathroom

In the main bathroom, I took a break from my go-to floor-to-ceiling tile and went with this stunning trim work around the room where we used a wood wainscoting with a marine finish so the bathtub won’t cause any water issues. The floor is a classic tile, one of my favorites. And then a huge walk-in closet is always a selling point!

Basement

In the basement I wanted to create a fun, interesting vibe. For the floor we did a wood-look tile in a herringbone pattern – super durable but elevated. For the backsplash of this bar, since the ceilings were on the very low side I wanted to add as much height as we could visually but not just all white so we went with these navy, light blue and white tiles. I was envisioning my kids hanging out down here, the music going and this just looks like the beat to the music down here.

Loft

My kids would LOVE this space! This loft space is such a functional use of space. I wanted to make this a really fun, laid back vibe. I wanted to make a functional workspace since we’re all so accustomed to kids working from home these days and so mom and dad have a work space in the office, the kids have a workspace up here. This would be so handy in my house! To add a little touch of whimsy, we went with the scallop detail across the top that’s gender neutral. Adding sconces above each desk space is that wonderful detail that adds so much charm. To elevate the space, instead of just doing can lights, we did flush-mount fixtures and a matching pendant light in the ceiling alcove. It’s a rare thing for me to actually use two of the same collection in one space but here it felt like the perfect thing to do. Behind the artwork between the bookcases is actually wiring for a TV.  So kids can hang out, be comfortable, but also the bookshelves really add the usable space to the room as well.

Shared Bathroom

What a fun space! Having this floating cabinet means easy to clean. I love the detail on the cabinetry door of this vanity. This bathroom we went with a blue tile in a diamond shape for the shower. To compliment it, we went with this marble tile for around the bathroom that little inlaid blue, gray and darker blue. The mirrors above are so handy – another item that I have in my daughter’s bathroom.
