This makes me cold! Just look at this house. It was so cold when we started. The exterior didn’t get a ton of attention because it was in such great shape, but we did clean things up a bit with changing out the shutters, the front paint and replace the front door and paint the trim around the arch window above. Then, for a little bit more character, we painted the bonnet roofs over the bay windows with a copper paint that oxidizes to give it that patina look as if it had been there for a hundred years. Let’s go on in!

Walking into the entryway, we wanted to make this space intentional and functional. So, we actually closed things up a bit. We closed the bottom of the stairs, creating this cozy, little desk nook that’s the perfect homework spot, or just a little place to sit at with plenty of light power and work surface. The perfect homework station, and right by the front door you need a place to put your shoes on! So, we added this floating bench to give it a little bit more personality!

OFFICE

His office before was pretty basic. It had openings from the entryway into the living room and had no privacy. It was super loud, and one of their big complaints was if he’s on a conference call in the office, you can hear him all the way throughout the house echoing. So, they wanted to close things up on the living room, gaining a wall of space, but then a welcoming feel with french doors so he could have true privacy in his office that fully works. We replaced all the hardwood floors, painted the walls a soft sage green and topped the room with a beautiful modern chandelier!

DINING ROOM

The dining room was maybe one of my favorites in this house. We got rid of the old carpet, putting in white oak floors and used the original furniture that was her parents, and had it refinished to make it feel lighter and brighter, a little bit more casual and less formal. Then, topped the room with beautiful black fixtures with white linen shades. Want to know the big change? We added trim work 3/4 of the way up the wall and painted all the window trim and the ceiling crown molding around the doors this dusty blue while still keeping the original wallpaper all the way around the upper third of the wall so that you have that perfect mix of new and old bringing the history together!

LIVING ROOM

The living room was such a huge space and such a huge transformation. We added hardwoods throughout the whole first floor, closed up the doorway into the office giving us so many more options for furniture placement and giving us a wall for the sofa so you could look out at that beautiful view through that giant window and right at that fireplace. It’s easy to save the history and the charm of a home when it looks so beautiful by just updating a little bit of tile and floors. Moving on to the dry bar. I loved this. They didn’t need it to be wet, so we closed up the sink and drain and added some beautiful tile for the backsplash in a Carrera marble black and  antique mirror, saved all the trim work and refaced it with Front and Center door fronts and simple hardware. For the shelves, we used scraps of soapstone to create this perfect way to finish off this space.

HEARTH ROOM

This was the perfect way to end the kitchen with a cozy sitting area. We preserved the original brick, painted the mantle, added sconces left and right, and then for the built-in bookcase, we saved it by adding Front and Center cabinet doors. Then, we took the molding all the way to the ceiling, so that we’d be able to add a picture light over the bookcases, giving it that cozy vibe and highlighting all of those beautiful little accents.

KITCHEN

The kitchen we wrapped in this soft white and truly upgraded the entire space. Originally, it was tiny and dated with a TWO burner stove! And with a whole family to feed! You couldn’t walk around the island and open the refrigerator at the same time because it was so crowded. So, we were able to open everything up, remove a wall, but add a new wall in the back of it, creating space for a walk-in from the garage to a mud room and giant pantry. We got rid of the extra eating area because we were able to seat eight at the kitchen island, and you have a dining room just a few steps away. We maximized the space, adding tons of cabinetry, a six burner stove, hidden appliances and opened up the view with a huge picture window to that beautiful backyard, even on a snowy day like this… it was a perfect view! We topped the counters with beautiful marble climbing the wall behind the stove. On the exterior wall, we added tile counter to ceiling. I love that we were able to hide the pantry in the cabinetry so that it just looked like a seamless walkway totally hiding the reveal of a laundry room and another entrance into the garage. A perfect way of creating a huge look at a minimal cost! 

We added the arched doorway with a pocket door to give plenty of walking space. One of my favorite things about the kitchen is that the kitchen countertops have built-in drainboards. To tie the look together, we added the same ribbed detail to the front of the sink. I personally have this in my kitchen and it’s one of my favorite things but I only have it on one side. We made it both sides which is so functional and a beautiful detail with the front of the sink having that same ribbed effect pulling it all together!

PANTRY/MUDROOM

I love that we were able to do an arched door into the pantry and giving them locker space with closed doors and an entrance from the garage, another sink, dishwasher, fridge and plenty of storage space for all the goodies that they’re going to bring home! Then we wrapped the room in a beautiful white and buttery yellow wallpaper, giving it a soft vibe next to the blue cabinetry and tiled the entire exterior wall in teeny tiny subway tiles of Carrara marble. Laid back luxe is exactly this! 

OUTDOOR PATIO

So for the backyard, a huge request was to have a big outdoor living space. We moved the exit from the dining room to the hearth room, adding French doors that take you out to a beautiful patio that we expanded. Then, we added a gazebo with covered space for sitting and hanging out and a custom fire pit that I made out of steel to give it an artful effect. I loved going on these field trips for each family! It was a fun way to get creative and show some extra love to the design of the home.
